Impressions from Berlin

Question: How do you experience Berlin in two days?

Answer: You don’t. Consequently, even though our study trip was scheduled to be two days, we stayed a few days extra.

We rented bikes for the two days of academic input. This proved to be an excellent way of seeing the city; we covered large areas in short amounts of time, and quickly got a sense of direction and feel of the Berlin Scale  (which, at least to me, left mixed impressions).

The first of the two-day academic marathon included visits to numerous sites, including Geschichtspark ehemaliges Zellengefängnis Moabit, the ULAP-park, the Spreebrogen park, passing through the Tiergarten for a lunch stop at the Scandinavian Embassies.

After lunch we visited the Neue Nationalgalerie, followed by various sites surrounding the Potsdamer Platz. We also passed through the Tilla Durieux Park.

Day two started at the Hackescher Markt, and from there we went to the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer and the adjacent park for a history lesson in the story of the Berlin Wall.

Lunch was set in the lively Hackesche Höfe. Afterwards the trip went to the Jüdisches Museum, where me and three other students went off on our own to visit among other things the mother of all model material stores: Modulor, Kreuzberg.

The final stop was at the Lustgarten adjacent to the Altes Museum.
