Construction design: Floating deck

Floating deck under construction. Nes, Akershus

Our summer project this year – me and my girlfriend, her brother and cousin – was the design and construction of a floating deck for the family cabin.

Initial sketches of framework, floating barrels and decking

As it goes, building something of this sort naturally requires to-scale drawings, material calculations and detailed 3D-models…

Sketch-Up model of the deck. We opted out of the railings, but the lid in the decking is there to cool drinks in summer (or entering the deck from below by diving!)

With a model in place it was easy to create working drawings and calculate materials required.

With just a footpath to the cabin by the lake in Nes, Akershus, we chose to row the materials in by boat.

No electricity meant measuring and cutting the wood by hand while trying to maintain a decent level of accuracy…

Inner framework complete, day one

After two days the framework were complete, including a trip to Sweden to aquire barrels to make it float.

It floats!

Afterwards it was time to add the decking.

Break while waiting for the rain to stop. Decking was added while on water, as the construction would be too heavy to move around otherwise.

The finished deck creates a lovely architectural contrast to the idyllic landscape. Well done, everybody!
